Cannes Lions 2009 - My Personal Top 5 Outdoor Picks

July 7, 2009

1. The Zimbabwean Newspaper: Fight the Regime- TBWA/Hunt/Lascaris, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Extremely hard-hitting and intelligent commentary on Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis, from exiled newspaper, the Zimbabwean. These billboards were produced using trillions of real Zimbabwean dollars, which were in fact a cheaper alternative to paper, and the perfect medium to raise awareness of the newspaper and its country’s plight.

2. Greenpeace: Boomerangs - DDB Paris, France

A beautifully simple analogy for how the actions we take today will come back and haunt us in the future.

3. United Nations (Sweden): Fundraising to support the war victims of Georgia - Ogilvy Stockholm, Sweden.

Real objects recovered from the war in Georgia are used in this powerful and poignant outdoor campaign to raise awareness of the impact of the crisis on civilians, and to support the UN fundraising effort via SMS donations.

4. Loctite Super: Wood/Plastic- DDB Milan, Itlay

PATTEX PLASTIC

PATTEX PORCELAIN

PATTEX WOOD

I love the warmth of the narrative in this campaign for what is otherwise a pretty dull product. Beautifully shot to reinforce the feeling of nostalgia and suggestive of a fairy-tale ending to a child’s bedtime story. Triggers happy memories of glueing a Star Wars landspeeder to my fingers…

5. CEPF: Industrial Pollution/Global Warming/Automotive Pollution - JWT Shanghai, China

Shan Shui style illustration is used to clever effect to highlight the damaging effect of industrial pollution and urban sprawl in areas of spectacular natural beauty in China.
