So now that the judges have packed up their clipboards for another year, the dust has settled and the hangovers have subsided, here’s my personal selection of top 10 films from Cannes 2009…
1. Philips: Carousel - Tribal DDB Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Hard to dispute the Grand Prix winner which I discussed in one of my earlier posts.
2. James Boag Draught: Pure Waters - Publicis Mojo, Sydney, Australia.
A well executed, simple, and entertaining dramatisation of an ownable product attribute. Look out for the guy pushing his other half into the lake - the timing is genius!
3. British Army/COI: Debris- Golley Slater Group, Cardiff, UK
Hugely emotive expression of a genuine insight. Painful but compelling viewing. Autobahn is the other execution in the campaign.
4. Heineken: Walk In Fridge - TBWA/NEBOKO Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Each to their own, right?!
5. Sanyo Video/Santec Video Surveillance: Gas Station - Serviceplan, Hamburg, Germany.
An obviously essential product benefit illustrated in a clear and innovative way.
6. Citroen: Shopping - H Suresnes, France.
Refreshingly creative automotive retail message…
7. Channel 4: Disarming Britain - Channel 4/4 Creative.
Arrestingly graphic and harrowing demonstration of the danger of hand guns, based on the insight that obtaining a weapon is as easy as child’s play.
8. Careerbuilder.com: Tips - Wieden + Kennedy, Portland, USA
Entertaining, yet appropriately irritating…
9. Environmental Defense Fund: Polar Bears - Biscuit Filmworks, LA, USA.
Strangely powerful and moving. A nice application of work by artist Joshua Harris.
10. Tele2: Snowracer
A refreshing incentive to make a call home! Other executions in the campaign are Golf Club and Scooter, but they don’t quite match the moment that ‘Goran’ nose-dives into the pool…
