Hi, I’m Jon. I’m a type of creative entrepreneur. That’s obviously not my job title (right now I’m officially an Advertising Account Director). It’s simply the best phrase I could think of to summarise what I’m passionate about, my professional mindset and the types of skills that I enjoy using wherever and whenever I can.
So what makes me a creative entrepreneur? Well for starters, I’m a big fan of creativity in business and the value that it can generate when it’s used strategically. I love helping to find opportunities to help businesses prosper – and love it even more when these opportunities have been identified and exploited to great effect with a healthy dollop of creativity. It’s something I’ve enjoyed learning about and practising for a few years now…
I originally studied Industrial (product) Design at university, before freelancing as a web designer. I then began to develop a keener interest in the role of design in business – both as a commercial and organisational tool. This led me to studying a Masters degree in Design and Branding Strategy, where amongst other things I honed some creative-management skills, and developed a passion for the business of brands – eventually writing a dissertation on what I regarded was a missed opportunity for an airline brand. If you are interested, you can take a look at some of these older projects by browsing ‘personal projects’, where you’ll also find some examples of my more recent creative exploits.
I have been working in the communications industry for about 4 years now as an agency “account man”, for want of a much better name (Creative Entrepreneur perhaps?!). Admittedly I don’t own or run my own business (right now), but I still regard myself as a type of creative entrepreneur, as my role is increasingly to help generate and cultivate creative ideas that add value in all sorts of ways, and then to work with experts from a wide variety of different disciplines to make things happen.
The communications industry has been the ideal place for me to explore and develop my interest in using creativity to build brands; be it through ‘traditional’ advertising, packaging, identity design, direct marketing, online, branded content, and all the other so-called ‘touchpoints’ that can be designed to infiltrate and engage networks of consumers more effectively. You can take a look at some of the commercial projects I’ve been involved in here (with thanks to all teams involved). The reason I’ve designed this website is not only to serve as a shameless personal plug - it’s main function is to be a handy portal to many of the things that are inspiring me to try and understand the challenges that are facing brands, and to help find creative ways to out-innovate the competition.
If you’ve stumbled across this site, I very much hope you’ll also find it of interest. Happy browsing.
